With this show, I am returning to charcoal. It’s still the same messy process I love—using my hands to rub and smear charcoal, and erasers to remove it. In addition to new drawings, there are works from my stop-motion animation Wings, and a series of images drawn from memory for an installation in my hometown of St. Maries, during its centennial celebration. — Elaine Green
Elaine Green is a Northwest artist whose work has been exhibited with numerous galleries and institutions throughout the region including the Boise Art Museum, Utah State University, Oregon State University, and The Art Spirit Gallery in Coeur d’Alene. After studying art at Spokane Falls Community College and Eastern Washington University, Green earned her MFA from the University of Idaho in 2005. She has been an art instructor in the Spokane area, and served as adjunct faculty with the Department of Art and Design at the University of Idaho.
WEST GALLERY: JESSE PECK
Pleasure Memory is a collection of paintings and drawings by New Haven, Connecticut artist Jesse Peck. Her work explores nostalgia –a ubiquitously bittersweet human emotion that encapsulates both pleasurable longing and a sense of loss– through a diffuse pictorial lens. Referencing both old-timey scenic backgrounds and hand-colored souvenir postcards, Pleasure Memory captures a soft, anti-frenetic moment through the use of pastel colors, blended brush work and close-cropped vignettes.
The setting of the work is Peck’s most constant childhood home, the French countryside. This work was made possible by the Leo Marchutz School of Painting and Drawing where Peck spent six immersive weeks exploring in and around Aix-en-Provence as an artist-in-residence.
Jesse Peck is a New Haven-based educator, artist and designer. Her mediums include: watercolor, oil, printmaking, photography and comics.
